A good siding job isn't only about the large, flat sections of the wall. The spots around lights, outlets, hose bibs, vents, and other fixtures need attention too. Those openings interrupt the siding, and the way they're finished affects both how the wall looks and how it handles weather.

What is a mounting block?
A mounting block gives an exterior fixture a flat, stable place to sit where it meets the siding. The right block depends on the fixture, the siding material, and the wall assembly. A light fixture and a hose bib don't necessarily use the same detail. When the block fits the application, the finished surface looks intentional instead of patched together.
Why does the detail matter in the Northwest?
Rain finds weak spots. Around any opening in an exterior wall, siding, weather barrier, flashing, and sealant have to work together as a system. A mounting block alone isn't a waterproofing shortcut. If the opening behind it isn't properly detailed, water can reach the wall even if the outside looks neat. A clean fit also makes it easier to finish the fixture without an awkward gap or a crooked mounting surface.
What should a homeowner ask?
Before new siding goes on, ask your contractor how exterior fixtures will be handled. Which blocks fit the fixtures and siding? How will the openings be flashed and tied into the weather barrier? Who will reconnect or install the fixture after the siding work? The answer should be specific to your house, not "we'll caulk around it later." Manufacturer instructions and the actual wall condition should guide the detail.
The photo above shows a mounting-block detail before the fixture is installed. It isn't a finished installation, and the finished fixture and weatherproofing are not visible. That's why it's worth looking beyond the siding panels when you review a job: the smaller transitions matter.
